The inner hinges are cracked, with noticeable, play due to the size and weight of the volume. The paper has tanned significantly with age. There is a previous owner’s name inscribed in ink on the front pastedown, dated November 1952. The edge of the text block is dust-stained and grubby.

108618 The War Office Military Engineering : Volume III - Part I Bridging 1941 London: The War Office, December 1941 [Printed under the Authority of His Majesty's Stationery Office, by William Clowes & Sons, Ltd., London and Beccles.] 5¼” x 8½”. 281pp, illustrations, diagrams, tables. Original green cloth blocked in black on the spine. The covers are rubbed and slightly marked, with some variation in colour and a small stain on the rear cover (near the bottom edge) but remain in good condition. There is a small notch on the top edge of the rear cover and there are some indentations along the edges of the boards. The spine ends and corners are bumped. There is a previous owner's name and service details inscribed heavily in blue ballpoint on the front free end-paper. This is F. H. Jaekel, Lieutenant Royal Engineers who was attached to the Royal West African Frontier Force (subsequently F. H. Jaekel, M.I.Mech.E., Assistant Chief Superintendent (Power), Nigerian Railway and then attached to the Ministry of Defence from 1966 to 1976). The inscription has left a distinct impression on the Title-Page. The paper has tanned severely though evenly with age and this can be seen in the images below. The paper is also quite thin and has wrinkled. The edge of the text block is grubby, dust-stained and lightly foxed.

Decorative blue boards gilt, backstrip missing, with upper and lower boards almost completely detached. The front free end-paper has the top corner missing, while the title page and rear free end-paper are both creased; there are some small tears to the edges of the first few pages; pages 33 to 36 have been torn and repaired with tape. Otherwise the contents are in very good condition. Contains a great deal on the Boer War, the death of Queen Victoria, Royalty in general, together with reports on then current political topics, the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia, the launching of the America’s Cup challenger, Shamrock, the final of the FA Cup, and much more. Together, this set provides a comprehensive overview of the first six months of the first year of the twentieth century. A photograph is available upon request. This is also an extremely heavy volume.

Original blue cloth gilt. The covers, overall, remain remarkably bright, though they have bowed outwards. There is a s small amount of old staining around the top corner of the front cover, and an obvious horizontal crease on the rear cover. There is a also a shallow gouge on the front cover which can be seen in the image above. The spine ends and corners are bumped. The end-papers are browned and quite heavily foxed. A previous owner's name on the Half-Title page has been defaced with white correction fluid. Although the text itself is very clean throughout this volume is marred by some heavy underlining in the text.

A creased and crumpled bookplate of Ernest J. Martin (who, I believe, was the founder of the Military Historical Society) is loosely taped to the front pastedown, while the original single-page flyer is also loosely inserted (please see the penultimate image below). The end-papers are foxed but this soon wears out leaving the text is clean throughout. The edge of the text block is dust-stained and lightly foxed.
